Sarasota Livin'

Sarasota needs to embrace non auto transit such as walking / biking trails (MURT's - Multi-Use Recreational Trails) where ever we can put them but if it is right next to your house how would you feel... I understand the "trama" but I hope to soon have one only one house from mine on the School Ave ROW ...

Trail plan has some neighbors up in arms

SARASOTA COUNTY -- No one expected a walking trail and bike path to spark neighborhood opposition, but that's exactly what happened in South Sarasota County.

Residents who live along Alligator Creek in South Venice voiced a refrain usually reserved for landfills and commercial projects: "Not in my back yard."

The 5.5-mile multipurpose path, which would run from Shamrock Park to Center Road, is stirring up opposition from nearby residents who fear they will lose their backyard privacy and have to deal with an increase in trespassing.

"Trails are a good idea; they are a community asset," County Commissioner Jon Thaxton said on Tuesday. "But what would I think about one if it ran near my house?"
