There is a pretty major renovation going on in Arlington Park right across from SMH. There is a major rezoning that just happen (I think?) on 4th St that will have some development happening very soon. Citrus Square is moving along pretty well.... just 3 sites from my Sunday morning bike ride.

Kilties and Sarasota High Band Concert

Wind Ensemble - FCAT

Tuesday evening we went to see the Kiltie band and Sarasota High band play at SHS.

I was pretty good ... I was most impressed by the last "special" performance of the Kiltie Wind Ensemble -- they played a song by "sight reading"

Mr Spreen the band director explained it as the FCAT for music. He passed out sheet music for a "new song" and they have to play it after a few minutes of him talking them through it. So in about 3 minutes they did a great job of it.

Institute for Public Policy and Leadership - Growth Seminar

The USF Institute for Public Policy and Leadership has been doing some interesting seminars lately (that I have become aware of ...)

I went to this seminar Tuesday ... it was somewhat scary.

Jack McCabe a Real Estate Consultant was so pessimistic I almost wanted to burn down my house for the insurance money (just kidding) since he thinks the market still has lots of downside -- the vultures have yet to buy -- and when they do the prices will be very low -- and that level will be what the appraisers see as "the gold standard."

Good thing Mike Bennett and Pat Neal where there with their more optimistic outlooks.. I support Mike Bennetts comment that SW Florida (Sarasota) can become an area that focuses on sustainable energy.

Eating Good or Good Eating?

I don't eat junk food everyday (depending on your definition ) but I just was impressed at how good this looked -- I only had a tiny little piece of it .... thanks to Morton's Market

I am really going to focus on better -- local organic foods ... really I want to .... I just wish it was easier to do ....

US 41 - slow down

I read with interest the news about the head of the Florida DOT listening to Sarasota City officials about changes to US41 to make it a little more pedestrian friendly....

What can be done? Surely the legal speed limit can be lowered, a step that would be safer for everyone -- drivers as well as pedestrians. Crosswalks and sidewalks can be better lit, enhancing critically important visibility at night. Bike paths can be expanded and the width of car lanes can be reduced, a psychological trick that encourages drivers to slow down. Enforcement of traffic laws can be stepped up to protect pedestrians, cyclists and motorists.

I now drive 41 to 301 N and S everyday. I am amazed at just how un-pedestrian friendly it is. 301 in Newtown is the worst. It is very far between red lights (for me driving that is good) so people routinely cross that busy road anywhere they need to .... for instance to get to the "neighborhood" stores across the road without walking an extra mile ....

I just don't think cars come first (except on Interstates....)

Charrette with your friends

Along with 119 other people I went to the School Avenue Charrette Thursday night. I got there pretty late so didn't see most the presentation .... I liked what I saw of the process and there where lots of interesting people.

February bike riding

This time of year I just can't complain about the weather here in Sarasota .... I another bike ride in shorts. Just a few of the pictures I took.

I do really like the trees on Main st... they are not big but they are nice to see.

Fruitville Road just has terrible walkablity / bikeability it's just designed for cars ... too bad ... lets see what the future brings.
